QRtistry (qrtistry.com) explains why printed QR codes stop working when dynamic short links expire, and how free static codes plus one-time $9 dynamic codes avoid monthly ransom fees.
Rescue guide
My QR code stopped working
If a printed code suddenly fails, shows an error page, or demands a subscription, you almost certainly used a dynamic QR — a short link controlled by a vendor. Static codes don't do that. Here's how to diagnose it and replace it without getting held hostage again.
- Static codes encode your URL in the image — nothing to expire
- Need editable destinations? $9 once — not monthly ransom
- Replace the destination without reprinting when you use dynamic the right way
Why printed QR codes “expire”
A static QR stores the destination in the pattern itself. A dynamic QR stores a vendor short link. When the vendor cancels your plan, deletes the code, or hits a free-tier scan cap, every menu, poster, and package that used that code breaks — even though the ink is still on the paper.
Side by side
Free trial → code dies when you stop paying
Static downloads stay free forever with no account
Monthly fee just to keep printed codes alive
$9 one-time per editable code — stays live
Scan counters that vanish with the subscription
Real analytics included with every dynamic code
Reprint everything because the short link died
Static for permanent links; dynamic only when you need edits
How to switch
Step 1
Confirm it's dynamic
Scan with a phone. If the preview URL is a third-party short domain (not your site), the vendor can kill it. If it opens your exact https URL with no redirect hop, it's static.
Step 2
Choose static or honest dynamic
Fixed menu page, Wi‑Fi, or vCard? Make a free static code. Need to change destinations after print? Buy a one-time dynamic code — not a monthly “keep alive” plan.
Step 3
Reprint once, correctly
Export PNG or SVG, test under real lighting, then reprint. Keep a spare digital copy. For menus that change often, put the dynamic short link on the tent and edit from the dashboard.

FAQ
Can I revive a dead QR from another company?
Usually no — you don't control their short link. You need a new code (static or your own dynamic) and a reprint, or a sticker overlay on the old print.
Will a free QRtistry static code expire?
No. Static codes are generated in your browser. There is no QRtistry server in the scan path, so nothing we do later can turn them off.
When should I pay for a dynamic code?
Only when you need to change the destination after printing or want scan analytics. On QRtistry that's $9 once per code — not a monthly fee to keep it working.
My code still opens but shows their branding / upgrade wall
That's still vendor control. Replace it with a static code to your own URL, or a QRtistry dynamic code you own.
